A D.C. Bar With No Alcohol? BloomBars in Columbia Heights Serves Up Art Instead

Let me start this article off by giving you some background.  You should know that this story only came to my attention because I was contacted on Twitter about a very unique type of bar in Columbia Heights…a bar that didn’t serve alcohol.

I was intrigued.

I first began receiving direct messages from @BloomBars inviting me, @LandauDC, to various programs and events that they were hosting about a week ago.

“What’s a BloomBar?” I thought to myself.

I visited their website and discovered BloomBars, not BloomBar, is a non-profit art “bar” that acts as a platform for artists, dancers, and other performers to show their stuff.

To be completely honest, though, I still didn’t really get it.  I decided I needed to go and see it for myself.

Amnesty International Activists Demonstrate for the Release of Indonesian Prisoner

This story comes to us from Aaron Barnard-Luce:

Amnesty International activists will protest in front of the Indonesian embassy on Thursday, November 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to demand the release of Filep Karma. He was imprisoned in 2004 for taking part in a flag-raising rally commemorating the declaration of Papuan independence.

Speakers at Thursday's rally will include Amnesty International USA Mid-Atlantic regional director Folabi Olagbaju and will be joined by West Papuan activists.

A court sentenced Karma to 15 years in prison, on charges of treason for "betraying" Indonesia by flying the outlawed Papuan flag.

"Make Your Food Better, And People Will Come To You": The Great D.C. Food Truck Debate

It’s unbelievable to think that just a few years ago the D.C. food truck scene consisted of nothing more than those standard hot dog/pretzel vendors that prey on tourists by the National Mall.

You know the trucks I’m talking about…the ones that are all painted that exact same yellowish color and have that same generic cartoon soft pretzel icon that looks ten times better than the one you end up purchasing.

How times have changed.

The D.C. food truck scene has absolutely exploded in the past year, featuring an emergence of creative, multi-cultural cuisine at affordable prices.  From Asian to Latin American, from Indian to Ethiopian, virtually every type of food is represented and can now be found on the streets of Downtown D.C.  The scary thing for restaurants is that the streetcar fare is actually good now…really good.  So good, in fact, that they might actually be stealing some of the old establishment’s lunch crowd.

My Quest for Healthy Ice Cream: Becoming a Vegan Gelato Artisan

I was in an awful jam; one that you may be in, yourself.

I loved ice cream so much that when I would buy a pint, I would eat a pint.  No need for freezer space. As soon as I got it home from the store, it was gone.

For years I knew that I had to find a way out.  I didn’t want to gain weight, clog my arteries, or spike my blood sugar…all eventualities from the “pint-of-ice-cream-daily” diet.  Nor did I want to contribute to enslaving cows or warming the globe, two unfortunate side effects of milk production.

What to do?

Searching for a stunningly delicious, nutritious, animal-and-earth-friendly frozen dessert, I came up empty-handed. My conclusion: I would have to create this product myself.

As I pondered how to proceed, I realized that I had finally found my green business idea.
