National Zoo’s Three Youngest Lion Cubs Appear Healthy and Strong

The story comes to us from the National Zoo:

At 2 weeks old, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s three African lion cubs born to 6-year-old Nababiep September 22 appear to be healthy, Zoo veterinarians said today, Wednesday, October 6, after completing the cubs’ first health exam.

“We’re happy to see that the cubs are growing and that each appears to be in good health,” said Dr. Jessica Siegal-Willott, supervisory veterinarian at the Zoo. “Naba has done a great job nursing them and we’ll continue to monitor their development.”

The veterinary team checked the cubs’ mouths and eyes, listened to their hearts and lungs and felt their bellies, but the animals are still too young to receive vaccines. The cubs weigh between 7 and 8 pounds.

DC Delinquent Taxes Accepted Without Penalties Until September 30 at Midnight

Scofflaws who owe the District of Columbia delinquent taxes have until midnight tonight, Thursday, September 30, to clear the slate and take advantage of the tax amnesty which waives collection fees, penalties and fear of prosecution.

“If you have outstanding taxes with the District, this is your last chance to pay them without penalties and fees,” warned Stephen M. Cordi, deputy chief financial officer for the District’s Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR).  “The last District amnesty was held in 1995, so it is likely to be some time before there is another opportunity.”

Employed individual tax debtors who do not take advantage of the amnesty should expect that additional money will be withheld from their paychecks beginning January 2011.

National Zoo Artificially Inseminates Asian Elephant

Veterinarians and animal care staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo conducted a series of artificial insemination procedures on Shanthi, a 34-year old Asian elephant, Sept. 19, 20, 21 and 22 with sperm from elephants from the Fort Worth Zoo and Tulsa Zoo. A successful pregnancy would be an important milestone in the Zoo’s commitment to Asian elephant conservation.

Scientists will monitor the level of the hormone progesterone in Shanthi’s blood. If concentrations remain elevated past 10 weeks after insemination, it most likely would mean she is pregnant, which would be confirmed by an ultrasound. An Asian elephant’s gestation period ranges from 20 to 22 months.

Shanthi gave birth to Kandula in 2001. He was the fifth elephant in the world conceived by artificial insemination.

DC Water Work to Impact Traffic on Connecticut Avenue

The DC Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) has informed the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) that nighttime utility work has been scheduled beginning Thursday, September 23, 2010, and will require temporary lane closures on Connecticut Avenue between Calvert Street and Woodley Road.  The closures will be limited to off-peak hours, but traffic delays are still possible and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible.

DC Water says it will be installing a 24” storm drain pipe on Connecticut Avenue for the next 30 days, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.  The pipe installation is part of DC Water’s ongoing program to upgrade its infrastructure and improve service to customers.

During the construction, traffic on Connecticut Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Calvert Street and Woodley Road, and there will be no on-street parking available from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. in those blocks.
