National Zoo Artificially Inseminates Asian Elephant

Veterinarians and animal care staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo conducted a series of artificial insemination procedures on Shanthi, a 34-year old Asian elephant, Sept. 19, 20, 21 and 22 with sperm from elephants from the Fort Worth Zoo and Tulsa Zoo. A successful pregnancy would be an important milestone in the Zoo’s commitment to Asian elephant conservation.

Scientists will monitor the level of the hormone progesterone in Shanthi’s blood. If concentrations remain elevated past 10 weeks after insemination, it most likely would mean she is pregnant, which would be confirmed by an ultrasound. An Asian elephant’s gestation period ranges from 20 to 22 months.

Shanthi gave birth to Kandula in 2001. He was the fifth elephant in the world conceived by artificial insemination.

National Zoo Welcomes Three Lion Cubs To The World As 6-Year-Old Nababiep Gives Birth

The Smithsonian National Zoo has three more residents.  The Zoo's 6-year-old lion Nababiep gave birth to three cubs this morning, Wednesday, September 22nd.  Nababiep's delivery of the three cubs came just about three weeks after her 5-year-old sister, Shara, had four cubs of her own.

The father of the cubs, Luke, a 4-year-old lion, is also the father of Shara's cubs.

“We are very proud to play a role in the management of this important species,” said Dennis Kelly, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park. “I am thrilled that everyone can watch the cubs in the very early days of their lives via our webcam. I know visitors to the National Zoo will be excited to follow the cubs as they interact with the adults, play with one another and grow up.”

A video clip of the newest cubs is available on the Zoo’s YouTube page.
