Residents Encouraged to Drop-off Unwanted and Expired Medications at Local Take-back Sites

District of Columbia residents will have the option to safely dispose of household medications at drug take-back sites throughout the city. The upcoming “Take-Back” initiative, being held on Saturday, October 29, is an effort to safely collect unused and expired medications and prevent improper drug disposal and distribution.

 

Learning How To Balance Our Energy

     Socrates said, “the unexamined life is not worth living.”  While I always recommend positive self-talk, (the examined life is a joyful experience, for example), Socrates is suggesting that we step back from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and have a look at who we are and what we have become. Perhaps you will agree, the wise teacher has a point! Where, you might ask, do we start?

     A great starting place for self-examination is comes in the form of an intriguing question:  Are we human beings or human doers?  Sometimes, I believe we should call ourselves human doers because it feels like we are always in action… we are doing this and doing that.  We all have such busy lives – going to meetings, conference calls, our kids’ sports games, carpooling, running errands, and so on…like well-oiled machines.

On Tuesday, September 20th, ABC 7's Natasha Barrett hosted the 2nd Annual Cupcakes & Cocktails benefitting the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) held at One Lounge, 1606 20th Street, NW. Barrett was joined by fellow ABC 7 broadcasters Alison StarlingLeon Harris and Arch Campbell as well as Fox 5's Steve Chenevey, WUSA 9's Anita Brikman and NBC 4's John Schriffen to judge the cupcake competition.

Quieting the Chatter

If you’re familiar with Self Talk, you probably read or heard me or others refer to it as our thoughts, inner dialogue, or Board of Directors.  

Our Self Talk can get quite loud at times, especially during times of transition and stress. Our Self Talk is then moving at turbo speed.  So how can we calm down our thoughts when we lead such active, full lives? How can we decrease the overload and stress? How do we quiet down the chatter?

Since having thoughts or inner conversations is part of being human, and because our lives are so busy, here are some ways to help you quiet the mind:

Although Hurricane Irene is long gone, her fury is still being felt by millions of east coast residents as they wade through her aftermath in an attempt to return to normalcy.  From severe flooding to lost power and water supply, the stories of all of our friends in all our communities affected are as expansive as those who have felt her aftermath.

Food VS Nutrition

Modern nutrition determines the healthiness of a food by isolating its vitamins, proteins, minerals, fats, and other constituents.  Choosing your foods based on the results of nutritional analysis, while it may help you become aware of your health needs, does not help you to know food intimately, which is where true health lies.  It is not the beta-carotene found in squash or carrots that makes these vegetables important food choices.  Vitamin C is not a valid reason to eat citrus fruits, nor should lycopene be the reason for eating tomatoes.  For a medical professional or other dietary professional to prescribe or suggest to someone an isolate nutrient like those just mentioned is quite a shame, for it helps no one.  

A Change In The Guard

Friends, we are in the midst of a global paradigm shift in health care. At the center of these changes are health and nutrition counselors, wellness coaches of various niches and specialties, acupuncturists, organic farmers, independent film makers, and the list now goes on and on. For example, healing modalities like TCM and Ayurveda are healing systems which promote health using natural, nontoxic substances and which recognizes the important role of the mind and emotions. A paradigm is a model used to explain how and why events happen the way they do, and as mankind's comprehension of the universe evolves, new paradigms emerge. The best example of paradigm shifts is in the field of modern physics. The classical Newtonian explanation of the world which for two hundred years was accepted as reality has now been replaced by quantum mechanics, superstrings, and field theory. In the old paradigm, every event had a definite cause and every action had an equal and opposite reaction.
