City Duck Departs DC for Southern Living

City Duck Departs DC for Southern Living

By Diana Foley, WHS Volunteer

Early one Friday morning in June, Donnie the Pekin duck was preparing to fly south—via US Airways. Tucked inside a soft-sided pet carrier, we made our way through the airport, keeping our fingers crossed that Donnie would make it through check-in and security without any trouble. We had called the airline ahead of time to confirm that Donnie would be allowed in the cabin, but knowing that ducks probably aren’t an everyday sight for travelers and airline staff, we proceeded with caution.

Pets Being Painted As Pandas, Other Wild Animals in China

Pets Being Painted As Pandas, Other Wild Animals in China

The people of D.C. love the pandas at the National Zoo.

Actually, love might not be a strong enough word to describe the District's affection for the cuddly creatures.

It is an infatuation, that sometimes borders on obsession, an infatuation that I believed was unmatched outside the region.

Well, I was wrong.  I was so very, very wrong.

In an article for GlobalPost.com, Emily Lodish explains how people in China are taking their love of wild animals to an entirely different level.

The Flower Felon

The Flower Felon

In the last few months, Cleveland Park residents have been frantically posting about their beautiful blooming flowers being stolen from their yards and community garden plots.  One resident claims that over 50 of her peony blooms were stolen. This blossom burglary has been going on for quite some time now. Many residents have described a man carrying flowers—loose, unwrapped, and strikingly similar those stolen from the neighborhood.

Wizards Fan Tries To Eat BGR Burger Joint's Mega Hamburger, Behind the Scenes Video

On Tuesday, November 23, Washington Wizards fan George Koonce attempted the impossible: eat BGR The Burger Joint's infamous 15 plus pound hamburger.  The sandwich(if you can call it that) has almost ten pounds of meat, more than a head of lettuce, multiple beefsteak tomatoes, a pound of pickles, as well as onions and sauce, in between two giant buns(approximately three pounds).

The challenge started at tip-off of the Wizards/76ers game.  If Koonce could finish the beast by the end of the third quarter, the entire crowd would receive a free BGR burger.

But poor George never stood a chance.

After the first quarter, he had finished just one slice that made up only 1/8 of the entire burger.  It was at this point that Koonce gave up.

"No one can eat this much food," He said as he cratered.

Bizarre, Seemingly Unsanitary Bathroom at 7-Eleven on 19th Street in NW

Let me preface this story, as well as these photos, by saying that I kind of feel bad posting this, simply because the people at the 7-Eleven were so nice to me when I went in yesterday.  I'm not a bad person, and I do appreciate the fact that they let me use their facilities even though I wasn't a customer, but what I saw needs to be seen.

It was around lunch time, and I was headed to Dupont Circle and needed to use a bathroom. So, upon seeing the recently opened 7-Eleven on 19th Street, I ducked into the convenience store and asked an employee if I could use the restroom even though I had no intention of purchasing an item.

He said, very kindly I might add, that I could and pointed me to the back of the store.  I opened the door to the bathroom and was taken aback.

The room was packed with trash and recycling bins, as well as containers that the store used to carry its products.  Had I entered the trash room by accident?  Nope.
